Profile

Prof. Emeritus Dr Johan Swinnen is an art historian, professor emeritus, independent art expert and court-appointed expert. He has taught and published on art history, visual culture, photography, heritage and the social significance of images.

He has been affiliated with, amongst others, the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Sorbonne, Anton de Kom University, the University of La Laguna and other academic institutions. Drawing on this international academic experience, he has developed broad expertise in art-historical research, image analysis, heritage studies and academic provenance research.

In addition, he played a significant role in higher art education and artistic training. He was the former director of the NHISK-KASKA in Antwerp and the founder and inaugural director of the HISK-Vlaanderen. In these roles, he helped build an intellectual and international context in which artists, researchers, curators and institutions could support one another.

Alongside his academic career, he has established a practice as an independent art expert and court-appointed expert. He advises private collectors, families, banks, insurers, solicitors, notaries, museums and public institutions.

His expertise bridges three worlds that rarely come together naturally: the academic study of the artwork, the concrete reality of the art market and the legal precision of the expert report. It is precisely this combination that makes his approach at once scientifically grounded, practically useful and ethically rigorous.

In addition to his academic and expert activities, Professor Emeritus Johan Swinnen is active within various national and international professional organisations. He is a board member of ARGUS Art Experts, a member of ABEX, a member of KGSO-CEJA, a member of AICA Belgium, a working member of UNESCO/CICOP and a member of the Admission Committee for Art and Antiques for Court Experts. Through these roles, he contributes to safeguarding quality, expertise, ethics and professional standards within the art, heritage and valuation sectors.
